scutoids are a really cool shape! they have many interesting properties, and show up all over nature! one of their most interesting properties is their self-packing, meaning they can pack together into a sheet with no space between. they strike a fine balance between locking together and being able to move freely, making them the perfect shape for cells. that's right, many cells in your body are shaped like scutoids!!!!

but what exactly is their shape? it's like a prism, but the bases aren't the same shape. most of the verticles between bases are connected like normal, but one or more edges split into two to accomodate the different amount of edges on each base. think of "splitting into two" as the same as forming the triangle. the shape on the left is called a 6-5 scutoid, because the bases are a hexagon and pentagon. most scutoids you'll see will look like this, but it's not the only possible one!

another cool things about scutoids: they're super recent. obviously they've existed forever, like it's a shape, but they were only given a proper definition and name in July 2018.
